Ingredients

  • Ingredients:For the Coffee Custard:
    • 1 1/2 cups strong brewed coffee, cooled
    • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
    • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
    • 3 large egg yolks
    • 1 cup whole milk
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    For the Whipped Cream:
    • 1 cup heavy cream
    • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
    • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
    For Assembly:
    • Dark chocolate shavings or cocoa powder for garnish
    • Coffee beans for decoration (optional)

Preparation

  • Instructions:Making the Coffee Custard:
    1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together the granulated sugar, cornstarch, and salt.
    2. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks and set aside.
    3. Gradually whisk the brewed coffee into the dry ingredients until smooth.
    4. Stir in the milk and vanilla extract.
    5. Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and comes to a gentle boil. This should take about 5-7 minutes.
    6. Once boiling, continue to cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until the custard is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon.
    7. Remove the saucepan from heat. Slowly pour a small amount of the hot custard into the bowl with the whisked egg yolks, whisking continuously. This tempers the eggs.
    8. Gradually whisk the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining custard.
    9. Return the saucepan to low heat and cook for an additional 2 minutes while stirring. Do not boil.
    10. Remove from heat, transfer the custard to a bowl, and let it cool to room temperature. Cover and refrigerate for 1-2 hours until fully chilled.
    Making the Whipped Cream:
    1. In a chilled bowl, whip the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
    Assembling the Coffee Parfait:
    1. Take four serving glasses or bowls.
    2. Spoon a layer of coffee custard into each glass.
    3. Add a layer of whipped cream on top of the custard.
    4. Repeat the layers until the glasses are filled, ending with a dollop of whipped cream.
    5. Garnish with dark chocolate shavings or a sprinkle of cocoa powder.
    6. Optionally, decorate with a few coffee beans for an elegant touch.
    7. Refrigerate the parfaits for an additional 1-2 hours to allow the flavors to meld.
    8. Serve chilled and enjoy your elegant Coffee Parfait!
