About the Recipe

Spiced Coffee Cake is a delightful winter dessert that incorporates the cozy warmth of coffee and a medley of spices. The crumbly streusel topping and coffee glaze make this cake a perfect treat for enjoying with a steaming cup of coffee on a cold winter day.

Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup brewed coffee, cooled to room temperature

For the Streusel Topping:

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

For the Coffee Glaze:

  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons brewed coffee, cooled to room temperature

Preparation

Steps:

For the Cake:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round or square baking pan.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and the ground spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves).
  3. In a separate large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the brewed coffee, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.

For the Streusel Topping:

  1. In a small bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, cold cubed butter, and ground cinnamon. Use a fork or your fingers to create a crumbly streusel mixture.

Assembly and Baking:

  1. Pour half of the cake batter into the prepared pan. Sprinkle half of the streusel topping over the batter. Add the remaining batter and then the rest of the streusel topping.
  2. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

For the Coffee Glaze:

  1. While the cake is baking, prepare the coffee glaze. In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and brewed coffee until smooth.
  2. Once the cake is done baking, allow it to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then drizzle the coffee glaze over the warm cake.
  3. Allow the cake to cool completely before slicing and serving.
