Classic Green Bean Casserole

Presentation Tip

For extra elegance, serve in a shallow dish so the golden onion topping is fully visible. Garnish with a few fresh thyme leaves for a hint of color.

Cooking Method ,
Ingredients
  • 1 pound 1 fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into 1-2 inch pieces (or 2 cans of green beans, drained)
  • 1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup (10.5 oz)
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tsp soy sauce (optional, for extra depth of flavor)
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 1/3 cups crispy fried onions (store-bought or homemade)
Instructions
  1. Prepare the Green Beans
  2. If using fresh green beans, blanch them in boiling water for about 3-5 minutes until bright green and slightly tender. Drain and transfer them to an ice bath to stop the cooking. Drain well and set aside.
  3. Make the Sauce
  4. In a mixing bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce (if using), and black pepper. Stir until smooth.
  5. Assemble the Casserole
  6. In a large mixing bowl, combine the green beans and half of the crispy fried onions. Pour the mushroom sauce over the mixture and toss until everything is evenly coated.
  7. Bake the Casserole
  8. Transfer the mixture to a 9x9-inch (or similar-sized) baking dish. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 25 minutes.
  9. Add the Crispy Topping
  10. Remove the casserole from the oven and sprinkle the remaining crispy fried onions on top. Return to the oven and bake for another 5-10 minutes or until the onions are golden and the casserole is bubbly.
  11. Serve and Enjoy
  12. Serve warm as a side dish. The casserole should be creamy with a crunchy onion topping.
