I know that sounds funny “Animal Husbandry” but raising livestock has been a rewarding experience that provides fresh eggs, milk, and meat. I’ve learned to provide proper housing, such as chicken coops and goat shelters, ensuring they are protected from predators and the elements. Feeding my animals a balanced diet and monitoring their health regularly helps prevent diseases. I also practice humane and ethical treatment, ensuring that my animals live in a stress-free environment.

3. Preserving Food:

Preserving the bounty from my garden ensures that I have food throughout the year. I’ve mastered canning techniques, using both water bath and pressure canning methods, depending on the food’s acidity. Dehydrating fruits and vegetables allows for long-term storage without refrigeration. Fermenting foods like sauerkraut and pickles not only preserves them but also adds beneficial probiotics. Freezing is another method I use, especially for berries and meats, ensuring they retain their nutritional value and taste.

4. Basic Carpentry:

Building and repairing structures like coops, sheds, and raised garden beds have become second nature. I’ve learned to use various carpentry tools such as saws, drills, and hammers. Understanding different types of wood and their uses helps me choose the right materials for each project. Creating sturdy structures ensures that they withstand weather conditions and last for years. I also enjoy adding personal touches to my projects, like painting and decorating, making them both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

5. Sewing and Knitting:

Creating and mending clothing, blankets, and other fabric items is both practical and enjoyable. I’ve learned various stitches and patterns that help me produce durable and beautiful items. Knitting scarves, hats, and socks for the winter keeps my family warm. Sewing allows me to make custom-fit clothing and repair torn garments, reducing the need to buy new ones. I also make household items like curtains, cushions, and reusable bags, adding a personal touch to my home.

6. Cooking from Scratch:

Preparing nutritious meals using whole, home-grown ingredients is a daily practice. Baking bread from freshly milled grains, making yogurt and cheese from my goats’ milk, and preparing hearty soups and stews from garden vegetables are some of my favorite activities. Meal planning helps me utilize what I have on hand, minimizing waste and ensuring that my family enjoys varied and healthy meals. Cooking from scratch not only tastes better but also provides the satisfaction of knowing exactly what’s in our food.
