What You Need to Know Before Letting a Hen Hatch Chicks
By Linda at Perky Dove

✅ Before She Goes Broody
- Have at least 6–8 fertile eggs available
- Choose a calm, reliable hen (Easter Eggers are great, but broodiness varies!)
- Provide a quiet, draft-free space for her nest
- Add fresh hay or pine shavings to her nesting area
- Remove fake eggs or golf balls if you’ve been using them to encourage laying
✅ While She’s Sitting (Approx. 21 Days)
- Limit disturbances — give her peace and quiet
- Mark the eggs (if needed) to avoid confusion with newly laid ones
- Offer food and water nearby so she doesn’t have to travel far
- Watch for signs of pests (mites, lice) — keep bedding clean
- Check in once a day for safety, but don’t hover
✅ When Chicks Hatch
- Allow mama to do the work — no need for heat lamps
- Make sure food and water are chick-friendly and accessible
- Use chick starter feed (non-medicated or medicated — your choice)
- Ensure there’s a safe space for mama and babies away from the rest of the flock
- Watch for any chicks that struggle to keep up — mama may need backup!
✅ Bonus Tips
- Let mama teach them how to scratch, peck, and dust bathe
- Don’t worry if she gets a little grouchy — she’s just doing her job!
- Enjoy the show — you’re witnessing nature at its best 💛
