What You Need to Know Before Letting a Hen Hatch Chicks
By Linda at Perky Dove

โ Before She Goes Broody
- Have at least 6โ8 fertile eggs available
- Choose a calm, reliable hen (Easter Eggers are great, but broodiness varies!)
- Provide a quiet, draft-free space for her nest
- Add fresh hay or pine shavings to her nesting area
- Remove fake eggs or golf balls if youโve been using them to encourage laying
โ While She’s Sitting (Approx. 21 Days)
- Limit disturbances โ give her peace and quiet
- Mark the eggs (if needed) to avoid confusion with newly laid ones
- Offer food and water nearby so she doesn’t have to travel far
- Watch for signs of pests (mites, lice) โ keep bedding clean
- Check in once a day for safety, but donโt hover
โ When Chicks Hatch
- Allow mama to do the work โ no need for heat lamps
- Make sure food and water are chick-friendly and accessible
- Use chick starter feed (non-medicated or medicated โ your choice)
- Ensure thereโs a safe space for mama and babies away from the rest of the flock
- Watch for any chicks that struggle to keep up โ mama may need backup!
โ Bonus Tips
- Let mama teach them how to scratch, peck, and dust bathe
- Donโt worry if she gets a little grouchy โ sheโs just doing her job!
